England have received powerful support from former Russia national coach Guus Hiddink in their demand for a total clean-up at FIFA.

Hiddink’s former employers, the Russian Football Federation, were handed the 2018 World Cup ahead of England by the Sepp Blatter’s FIFA executive committee.

But, amid the allegations of corruption within world football’s governing body, Hiddink supports the FA’s demands for a FIFA revolution.

Hiddink said: “FIFA must realise by now they have a problem with their image. The world’s governing football body has not come out of this unscathed. It is time for changes.”

Could the Fifa executive committee put aside its apparent antipathy to a joint bid and name Spain and Portugal as co-hosts for the 2018 World Cup?

The less-than-smooth running of the 2002 finals in South Korea and Japan, both of whom are bidding for the 2022 World Cup, is still remembered bitterly in the hallowed hallways of Fifa's Zurich headquarters, while the organisation of the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine is still fraught with problems.

However, the successful staging of Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland showed that two countries can get along without political bickering and infighting.

Jaime Lissavetzky said it best. "I am getting used to losing," the Spanish sports minister shrugged sadly.

There was a depressing familiarity to today's proceedings: Spain felt that it had the best bid but was left disappointed – just as the country had been in the battle to host the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. For many, the inescapable feeling is that sporting fashions and political manoeuvrings, not meritocracy, hold sway.

Spain had been handed a very favourable report from the Fifa inspection committee and expected to get at least nine votes in the first round.
